Journalists put forth suggestions to combat climate change
LAHORE – Spreading climate change awareness and urging masses, government functionaries, policymakers, and media personnel to make collective efforts to save the environment from degradation is the need of the hour.
Experts on climate change stressed this during a two-day workshop titled “Clean and Green Pakistan,” organized by Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF).
The purpose of the workshop was to have an interactive dialogue with media and highlight the climate change issues in the context of the threats they posed to the life on earth.
It was a dedicated attempt to create a sense of responsibility among participants regarding coverage of these issues and making the policymakers take corrective decisions.
Ahmed Rafay Alam, an expert on climate change issues, said global warming had led to an increase of temperature by 1.5C above per industrial level. Carbon pollution, he said was also on the rise and there was a need to cut it down to 45 percent by 2030 and zero levels by 2050.
During the workshop, the media personnel also gave their input. Sudhir Chaudhry from BOL TV discussed ways to minimize the impacts of climate change and suggested environment -friendly behaviors that need to be adopted.
Saeed Khokhar said as Pakistan is a developing country with a vast scope for industrialization, there should be plans like those in the European countries to make this growth sustainable and free of negative impacts.
The trainers Aamir Amjad and Shafqat Aziz engaged the participants in elaborative discussions and innovative group work and exercises that turned out to be highly productive. The participants worked out mechanisms for mutual engagement in future and came out with suggestions on how to take the learnings of the training workshop to a broader audience. – A media release
