A Determined Step for Press Freedom, Journalist Safety and Justice

Editorial Daily Nawa-I-AhmedpurSharqia—- November 4,2025

On November 2, a significant seminar was organized in Ahmedpur East by the Rural Media Network Pakistan (RMNP) in collaboration with Daily Nawa-I-Ahmedpur Sharqia to observe the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. The event once again reaffirmed that Pakistan’s journalist community remains united, resilient, and committed in its struggle for press freedom, safety, and professional dignity.

The strong participation of 14 press clubs from three districts, unanimous passage of two resolutions, and the firm stance against recent amendments to the PECA Act reflect a clear message: Pakistani journalists are determined to protect the freedom of expression and defend their mission and lives through democratic and peaceful means.

Participants rightly emphasized that Amendment 26-A to the PECA Act violates principles of press freedom and freedom of expression. In every civilized society, free flow of information, room for dissent, and independence of the media are pillars of democratic policy. Therefore, the demand for immediate withdrawal of all cases registered against journalists under PECA is just, lawful, and essential for upholding constitutional freedoms.

Equally important was the call to the Prime Minister of Pakistan to ensure effective enforcement of the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act 2021, and the appeal to all provincial governments to pass robust legislation for the safety of media persons. Pakistan has made commitments under the United Nations Plan of Action for Journalists, and it is time these commitments are implemented in letter and spirit.

RMNP’s annual press freedom report revealed that 154 journalists were killed worldwide in 2025, including six from Pakistan. These numbers represent human lives, families, and courageous missions dedicated to truth. The international community must reflect on why attacks on media continue unchecked and take meaningful steps for accountability and protection of journalists.

At the closing ceremony, honorary certificates and a community reporting award were presented to journalists, symbolizing recognition of integrity, public service, and commitment to truth—the true capital of journalism.

We reaffirm: Every attempt to silence journalism will fail. The struggle for truth and press freedom will continue. Freedom of expression is essential for Pakistan’s democratic future.

It is now imperative that the government, institutions, and civil society work collectively to ensure a safe environment where journalists perform their duties without fear or intimidation. Only then can Pakistan progress as a strong, democratic, and enlightened nation.
