SC issues contempt notices to Jang Group publisher, editor, The News reporter
ISLAMABAD: Taking notice of news reports published in Daily Jang and The News, the Supreme Court on Monday issued contempt of court notices to the Jang Group’s Editor-in-Chief Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, Publisher/Printer Mir Javed Rahman and The News reporter Ahmad Noorani. A three-member special implementation bench on the PanamaLeaks case verdict headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsen issued the contempt notice.
During the proceedings, the court asked as to who is representing The News. At this Sohail Khan present in the courtroom said that he was representing The News but told the court that he has not filed the story but it was filed by Ahmad Noorani.
“We know you Mr Sohail Khan,” Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed said. Sohail Khan told the court that Ahmad Noorani comes to the court and he may be in the courtroom today as well. Justice Ejaz Afzal said that how Noorani dared to call the sitting judge of the court on landline.
The judge said: “I told him that judges speak in the courtroom and through their judgment.” Justice Ejaz said that this constituted outright contempt.
“We in the circumstances issue notices to the Editor-in-Chief of The News Mir Shakilur Rahman, Printer Mir Javed Rahman and Ahmad Noorani, the reporter of The News, to explain as to why they should not be proceeded under Article 204 of the Constitution read with Contempt of Court Ordinance 2003,” the court ruled in its order. The court directed that they should submit their replies in seven days. Later, the court adjourned the hearing until July 17.
NNI adds: “This is direct contempt of court,” Justice Ijazul Ahsen said, adding that the case is being constantly misreported.
