RMNP annual # End Impunity campaign demands media protection law
Rural Media Network Pakistan (RMNP) , in coordination with its
affiliates launches the eight -week End Impunity Campaign for attacks against media workers in Pakistan.It began on on November 2, the UN International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, and will run until December 23.
In 2014, 16 journalists lost their lives in the line of duty in
different regions of Pakistan.The 2015 RMNP campaign focuses on
government authorities which have consistently failed to display a
genuine commitment towards ending impunity and bringing perpetrators and masterminds to justice. The first week a seminar was organized in Press Club Sadiqabad, where President Press Club Sadiqabad Rana Muhammad Arshad Javed, General Secretary Khushi Muhammad Waseem, senior journalist Munnawar Zia Qardri,President Sadiqabad Union of Journalists Junaid Anwar Kazmi,Editor Daily Difah Farhan Malik and Professor Mohd Din Johar flayed the government over its failure to provide security for journalists.Speakers stated that 700 journalists were killed in the world during last decade while 115 journalists killed in Pakistan since 2000.They said that majority of the journalists killed in Pakistan belong to small towns and rural areas.There is constant threat to the life of journalists in our country,said President RMNP Ehsan Ahmed Sehar, that is why last year IFJ had declared Pakistan as the most dangerous country for journalists.He undelined need of the approval of media protection bill by Pakistani parliament. UNESCO safety handbooks, CD’s and RMNP safety training manuals were distributed among 30 participants who are associated with print and electronic media. Meanwhile,RMNP in collaboration with Rahim Yar Khan Union of Journalists (RUJ) is organizing a semina”Government Responsibility In Ending Impunity For Crimes Against Journalists” on November 22 ( Sunday) at 11 AM in Jag Welfare Movement Auditorium” RahimYarKhan city while two more events will be held in the Media Studies Department of Islamia University Bahawalpur and Press Club Bahawalnagar.
