PFUJ concerned over government’s tactics against regional papers
ISLAMABAD— Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist (PFUJ) has expressed concern over the government’s negative tactics against regional newspapers aimed at shutting down their printing, rendering thousands of employees jobless.
In a joint statement, PFUJ President Shahzada Zulfiqar and Secretary-General Nasir Zaidi said the government, particularly the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Press Information Department (PID) were using tactics that could have serious repercussions,” they added.
The media industry is in crisis, and coronavirus pandemic has further aggravated the situation, they said. “In these difficult times, such moves are forcing newspaper owners of regional publications to cease publishing. These places provide jobs to thousands of journalists across the country.”
PFUJ demanded a strategy to save these publications so that the jobs of media workers could be secured.
