Journalists in Peshawar begin protests in earnest

protest 1PESHAWAR – Journalists in Peshawar on Monday decided to start protests in earnest against the wholesale layoffs of media workers, pay cuts, and wage delays.
In a joint general body meeting of the Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUJ) and Peshawar Press Club, the members agreed to completely boycott the ongoing session of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly from Tuesday.
The journalists also agreed to boycott a reception for them, hosted by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman on Monday.
The protesters also announced boycotting coverage of provincial Information Minister Shaukat Yousafzai. They stopped from coming to the press club on Monday.
The meeting also decided to file a petition at the Peshawar High Court against the terminations of media workers, and to seek stoppage of advertisements to media houses laying off employees.
In this regard, the house called on the laid-off workers to submit their particulars with the press club.
Journalists would wear black armbands while covering government events, while a protest camp is being set up outside the Peshawar Press Club from Tuesday.
The meeting also announced that journalists violating their decisions would have their membership of the press club and KhUJ suspended.
