Former DCMF International Department Head Neven Melek Expresses Solidarity with Pakistani Journalists on WPFD 2026

Message from Ottawa Appreciates Rural Media Network Pakistan for Defending Press Freedom and Supporting Community Voices

It is a privilege to send my heartfelt greetings to all journalists, editors, media workers, and community members gathered in Ahmedpur East for World Press Freedom Day 2026. I want you to know that your work is seen, valued, and deeply respected.

Press freedom is not an abstract principle, it is a lived reality shaped every day by the courage of individuals who continue reporting despite shrinking space, economic pressures, and personal risk. I have followed the work of the Rural Media Network Pakistan for many years, and I remain inspired by your commitment to protecting journalists and amplifying the voices of local communities.

This year’s theme resonates strongly. When the space for independent journalism narrows, it is not only the media that suffers, it is society as a whole. Yet, even in difficult circumstances, Pakistani journalists continue to show resilience, integrity, and an unwavering belief in the public’s right to know.

I stand with you in solidarity. Your efforts matter far beyond your region, they contribute to the global struggle for truth, accountability, and human dignity. Please know that your work strengthens the entire international community of media freedom advocates.

On this World Press Freedom Day, I send you my warmest regards and my admiration. May your voices remain strong, your work remain safe, and your commitment continue to inspire others around the world.
