FIA arrests Dr. Omar Adil for inappropriate conduct against female anchor Gharidah Farooqi on social media
ISLAMABAD—The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of Pakistan has arrested Dr. Omar Adil for inappropriate conduct against female anchor Gharidah Farooqi on social media.
The arrest was made following a complaint by Farooqi, which led the FIA Cyber Crime unit to file a case against Dr. Adil.
Dr. Adil made sexist remarks about Farooqi and other female anchors in an online program hosted by vlogger Zohaib Saleem Butt last month. Butt issued a public apology for publishing sexist content after Farooqi’s legal notice accused him of disseminating derogatory and sexist content that damaged her reputation and that of women journalists.
Farooqi earlier tweeted that Dr. Adil had been arrested for making offensive remarks against female anchors, including herself, on digital platforms.
Farooqi stated in her post, “Dr. Umar Adil has been arrested following my legal complaint. Dr. Adil made obscene, vulgar, and defamatory accusations against me and all women working in the media, specifically targeting me by name.”
She added, “I had provided Dr. Adil an opportunity to publicly apologize through legal proceedings, but he failed to do so. I salute all law enforcement agencies who acted on my request for the protection of women.”
In her post, Farooqi also expressed hope that justice would be served, and perpetrators of crimes against women would face consequences, leading to enhanced protection for women in Pakistan.
