New York: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday urged the Bangladesh government to ensure that blogger Niloy Chatterjee’s killers are brought to justice.
In a statement, the Secretary General voiced concern over these “gruesome” crimes and their impact on the freedom of expression in Bangladesh. He called on the government to bring those responsible to justice “in an expeditious manner” and ensure that citizens enjoy freedom of expression and other human rights “without fear.”
The latest murder, the fourth since February, has also received strong condemnation from the United States, the United Kingdom. the European Union.
FBI to assist probe
Meanwhile, there is no visible progress in the probe. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation, which has been assisting the probe of blogger Avijit Roy murder, has approached the Bangladesh government with an offer to help the investigation into Chatterjee’s murder.
Senior police officers, however, said the probe would be handed over to the Detective Branch soon.
