Calls for Immediate Arrest of Assailants and Transparent Investigation

Bahawalpur, June 7, 2026: Rural Media Network Pakistan (RMNP) has strongly condemned the brutal attack on Daily Khabrain crime reporter Mian Zahid Owaisi, describing it as a direct assault on press freedom, freedom of expression, and the rule of law.

According to reports, Mian Zahid Owaisi was surrounded and attacked by 10 to 15 armed individuals near Bandra Pul on Multan Road. The attackers allegedly beat him with sticks and clubs, causing serious injuries. He was subsequently shifted to Bahawal Victoria Hospital for medical treatment.

In a statement issued here, RMNP said that the broad daylight attack was not merely an assault on an individual journalist but an attack on the fundamental principles of a free press and democratic society. The organization expressed serious concern over the increasing incidents of violence against journalists in Pakistan, noting that such attacks create a climate of fear and undermine the public’s right to information.

RMNP stated that journalists serve as the eyes and ears of society, and when media professionals themselves are unsafe, serious questions arise regarding the security of ordinary citizens and the effectiveness of law enforcement mechanisms.

The organization has called upon Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and the Inspector General of Police Punjab to take immediate notice of the incident, ensure the prompt arrest of all those involved, and order a transparent and impartial investigation so that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the District Police Officer (DPO) Bahawalpur, Rana Abdul Wahab, has taken notice of the incident. According to the Bahawalpur Police Public Relations Office, police reached the scene promptly, initiated legal proceedings, and constituted special teams to trace and arrest the suspects. Investigations are reportedly underway from all angles.

RMNP reiterated its commitment to advocating for the safety of journalists and the protection of media freedom throughout Pakistan and urged the authorities to take concrete measures to prevent such attacks from recurring.
