ISLAMABAD—Journalist Matiullah Jan was released from Adiala Jail on Saturday evening, concluding a day of uncertainty amid concerns he might be transferred to Attock Jail despite securing bail.
Matiullah’s lawyer, Imaan Mazari, confirmed his release through a tweet in the evening, putting to rest fears surrounding his prolonged detention.
Earlier, following his bail, Matiullah told BBC Urdu that he was not subjected to torture during his custody. “I had some good chitchat with the policemen,” he remarked, offering a glimpse of his composure under pressure.
The news of his bail sparked a wave of relief and humor among fellow journalists. Azaz Syed quipped, “Matiullah’s addiction to news has brought him here.” Journalist Fayaz Raja shared a light-hearted anecdote, revealing how Matiullah had once persuaded him to quit smoking, and joked about Matiullah’s supposed “addiction” being the subject of humor even among the police.
Matiullah expressed gratitude to all who stood by him, saying, “I thank everyone who raised their voice for me.”
