Brief statement on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day 2024 - World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA)

“It is an incredibly important year for democracy, with a record number of people participating in elections in some of the world’s most populous countries. Democratic institutions are under threat globally from disinformation and deliberate attempts to subvert the processes that keep our societies functioning for the many and not the few. The media therefore have a vital role in ensuring voters are informed and politicians are held to account – on their records to-date, and on their promises to come. Journalists are on the front lines in this battle and their safety is paramount. Pakistan has of course already shown us this year the importance of an active press to the democratic process – reinforcing the key role it plays is vital to the health and prosperity of the entire nation. And in a year that has been blighted by conflict, with the press remaining under siege in Ukraine, hanging on a lifeline in Sudan, and the death of so many of our colleagues in Gaza, it is more important than ever to ensure the press is free to carry out its watchdog role and journalists are protected.

On behalf of the World Association of News Publishers, I send warm greetings to all Rural Media Network Pakistan members and affiliates, and particularly its President Ehsan Ahmed Sehar, wishing you all a productive and peaceful World Press Freedom Day and commending the vital work you do on behalf of your communities.”
